Generally no if you live where the temperature is low enough where you need to run the furnace. The furnace emits warm dry air into the area it heats. Actually, you may need add a humidifier. Most of the time heated air is dry. In the winter, does your skin dry out? Get sparks from contact with others or fabrics? You probably have dry air. There are free standing humidifiers available or your can have a HVAC company install a humidifier unit directly onto your furnace. This is controlled by water flow and can be turned off for the warmer, moist air months. Hope this helps.

Get a humidity measurer (I have one I got from Babies R' Us to measure the percentage of humidity in the baby's room) and just check it everyday and turn the dehumidifier on when the humidity is over 30% or so.

Depends on the humidity in the area. High humidity will allow mold to grow. The humidity level should be around 40% ideally. At 30% or lower, you will have wood items cracking and nasal problems. At 50% mold will grow and you will be able to feel the dampness and it will feel stuffy.
