Some Nazis escaped to South America after WWII and did very well. Some were found and punished. Mengele, the worst of the lot, escaped capture and died a pretty natural death. Anyone in a position of authority back then is either incredibly old or dead by now.

I don't think the German population did very much to hide the Nazis on purpose. Just like the German immigrants who came to the US, they became Argentinians or Chileans. The Nazis just fit in because of appearance and language.

The Odessa project was created by German intelligence near the end of the war, when they knew they were going to lose.

The Germans secreted away some of the money, gold, and artifacts they had stolen. They provided escape routes to South American countries that wouldn't extradite to the Allies. They kept some of the secret files of the SS and Gestapo so that some of their numbers could buy safety in Allied countries by giving information in exchange for their lives and freedom.
