Wack, try reading the P.I. novels in the fantasy section by Glen Cook. Pretty good series for old vets who like this kind of stuff. I like it and am an old vet too.

I'm not sure when it came out, but I got to read some of his stuff that I got from the library. The librarian suggested them after she saw what I was checking out. I loved them. I just turned sixty and I enjoy the gum shoes set in that time frame.
I even read fantasy and horror, the oddest was a gum shoe name Cat's Eye Gomez. Cat's Eye is a enhanced cat,(remember this is a fantasy) he reads nothing other than Spillane's and other PI's. He ends up being a PI. Our library has a lot of old TV shows you can check out, I got all the Charlie Chan's. I vaguely remembered them when I was a kid.
They are hysterical. "Feet don't fail me now". Happy Holidays

I thought it might be Kiss Me Deadly. Wrong again. But I loved Mike Hammer and read many books by Spillane. So manly and crude. No emos

Was it "I, The Jury"? Mystery novel. Probably the first paperback I ever saw with significant parts highlighted or underlined. Just a guess.

I think it was "I, The Jury". I still remember the closing lines:
"She came towards me, a suntanned goddess offering herself to her lover. The roar of the .45 shook the room". What a wrap-up!
