I bought a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier. There were no problems until I filled up the gas tank and the check engine light came on. I had my independent garage put it on their computer and it came back as an "evaporative engine leak" (I think that is the term). I went to a chevy dealer and had the same result with the diagnosis that I needed to replace the entire gas tank.

This was done and all was well until I got the first tank of gas again. Check Enginne light came on. My independent guy put it on the computer - same error. They turned it off and it stayed off until I got gas again. Same scenario and all was well until I got gas again this morning and the light is back on.

My car will probably not pass inspection if that error remains and light is on. What might be the problem and possible soultion? Any ideas at all?

The error code is a evap system leak has been detected. I have never seen this kind of car needing a gas tank to fix this. What it usually is the gas cap is loose or leaking. There have been instances where there is a leak in the filler pipes or hoses, but rarely. This is usually not a fuel leak, but a vapor leak. There are proper diagnosis steps in finding what is wrong.

make sure your putting the gas cap back on right and all they way. you may also need a new cap. the cap not being on all the way will turn that light on.
