The solar system is a collective body of planets ranging from rocky to gaseous. Some planets, like earth( and possibly mars)are inhabitable, while others like venus, mercury, neptune, and jupiter are uninhabitable. The solar system now consists of 8 planets(used to be 9) since pluto has been reclassified as a dwarf planet. Of course there are also the moons of the solar sysem. Some of these moons are thought to be inhabitable. About 160 moons are known in the solar system. There is also the ateroid belt and kuiper belt objects, space junk and dust. And last but not least there is the one thing that keeps the solar system in place, the sun. The sun's gravitational pull on the planets keeps them in their orbits. Without the sun there would be no solar system.

Our Solar System is a planetary system with a central Sun, nine main planets, some with moons, and located in the Milky Way Galaxy.
Our Sun and its main planetary bodies include Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
The Solar System was formed out of a Solar Nebula, which is a cloud of interstellar gases and materials that group into a star system in a region of space over time.
Including the Sun and the Planets, the Solar System also mainly consists of space, other asteroids, comets, and objects, and on the third planet from the Sun - human life.

The Solar System or solar system[a] consists of the Sun and the other celestial objects gravitationally bound to it: the eight planets, their 166 known moons,[1] three dwarf planets (Ceres, Pluto, and Eris and their four known moons), and billions of small bodies. This last category includes asteroids, Kuiper belt objects, comets, meteoroids, and interplanetary dust

It's in the name. It is the system of planetary (and smaller)bodies that exist within the area dominated by the gravitational pull of Sol, the sun.
