I lived in the country growing up, and we never had cable. We could only get 1 or 2 stations the whole time I was growing up, and we had a big antenna on top of the roof to help with that. It had a rotor on it and I guess a primitive remote control, but it broke pretty soon after we got it.
The rest of this is really only funny if you know my dad--he was a true backwoods handy man who made do and "jerry-rigged" things all his life--(think the Hank Jr. song "A Country Boy Can Survive"!) Anyway, one of his handy go-to tools was a fishing rod and reel--I had seen him use it to install a swing over a limb in the back yard (by casting the line over the limb, tying on the rope and then reeling it back in to pull the rope over the limb, etc.) Anyway, he figured out how to hook the antenna and adjust it with the rod and reel. I was a teenager at the time, and was so embarrassed to think that someone I knew might drive by and see my dad casting and "fishing" the roof of our house!! Looking back now, I have to admit it was a pretty clever solution!

Yep, I remember those days. My Dad hooked up a contraption that helped turn the pole that was attached to the aerial. We had to go into our bedroom and open the window and turn this crank thingy to turn it slowly and yell back and forth on where to stop when the reception improved. Those were the days. Hated doing it when it rained though, cause we would get wet, then Mom made us take a bath for some reason like there were too many germs in the rainwater or something. Hated that part. But it does bring back memories.

I remember.Didn't it seem like some people just touching the antenna would make the picture clear? One year we were watching the Miss America show.At the end the antenna went fuzzy,my little brother got up and grabbed the end and held it til the show was over.God I love that guy,still.....

Not only was that type of antenna annoying, but if you got stuck making the adjustment and suddenly the picture was great - everybody else wanted you to stand there and hold it in place.

you bet we did and when the wind from a storm blew it off the roof--we would READ a book[yes kids i said read as in no TV;computers[never heard of 'em];ipods get the picture].Only when dad and we 3 boys put it back up we could again enjoy t.v. Now you HAVE to have stupid cable just to watch local channels.Sometimes i think the old times were the "best times"

Dear Bruce Fan.
You might as well buy a new TV, because that frequency with
that type antenna, "will be no longer broadcasted." and be
"obsolete." So get that new TV now, while they are on sale.
And you will never have to adjust it again.
The only thing you have to decide, when you buy a new TV. is
Do you want "cable," or do you want a "dish."
I, myself, prefer "cable." There are only "two" choices.<}:-})

Yes, we had one in the 50's & early 60's. My father was pretty much in control of it. Those were the Good Old Days. :)
