Currently most glaciers in the world are retreating because we are in an Interglacial Period.

When the weight of snow and ice is great enough the glacier starts moving downhill under the influence of gravity. This point is determined by the relationship between accumulation and wastage of the glacier.

the weight of the ice formed behind pushes the ice in front. this combined with the pull of gravity causes a glacier to "flow". not quickly but steadily.
