My great grandma use to make quilts out of fabric scraps and old clothes... she would sew them together until it was big enough to be a blanket.
When I was growing up, my mom use to find cute, or pretty fabric with pictures on them. Then she would sew around the pictures creating a quilted look.
So, what is the difference in the two types of quilting?

When we talk about quilting, there are actually 2 different topics : creating the top, and then the actual quilting. There are lots of different was to make a top. Grandma was doing patchwork piecing, and then she would decide whether to quilt it, or tie it.. Your mom skipped the first part by finding material that had a design she liked, then quilting around it. It's also called a cheater quilt but that's not a bad thing!

theres not that much of a difference your grandma made a scrap quilt which can be difficult if you use different shapes and your mom by the sounds of it make a block quilt (made out of squares) which is very easy. All a quilt is fabric peices sewn together to make a blanket. Hope that helps!

Technically both were doing quilting. One made the top and then probably quilted it together with a backing fabric, and your mom had the quilt already made and then quilted it. Grandma was doing peicing and mom was using whole fabric.
