I was always brought up in that respect,
I believe that it's served me very well Alfred.
Thank you very much :)

Most definately! And woebetide any child that went against it! There were no childrens' rights back then and it seemed like absolutely anyone could give you a slap if they were an adult....parents, neighbours, local bobby, teachers, strangers etc., If you misbehaved in public everyone would have a go! And some people call them "the good ol' days!".....not from where I was standing they weren't! lol.

Yes
I never asked for anything because i was scared my mum would say no. I am a very quiet person and am naturally a little shy. I am a very contemplative person and i like to think about things a lot. Usually there is a lot more going on in my head than i let people think and i dont mind if they underestimate me because of it.

Alfred, I was shy and because I am older like you I was raised to NOT speak unless spoken to on most occasions. Too bad "kids" now days don't do that!

I was rarely seen either. Always running about in the park or messing around on our freezing little beach. I went home to eat and sleep.

I was told to mind my manners and knew to keep quiet when adults were talking. As an only child I just remember adults talking to me as a 'grown up'; maybe that is a substitute for having siblings!

In my family, children were meant to be seen and not heard. Maybe that's why I would get my @ss beat at school by the bullies and nothing would happen.

Unfortunately, I was seen but not listened to. I was considered too stupid by my dad. Your parents must have been pretty special. My Mom was great {she was my step mom} but always stood by me--which got her into trouble with my dad.

Almost all the time . . . until I got to about the age of 14 or 15
I think my parents had a revelation and started talking to me about my needs and wants

around strangers-yes,
around people I knew-no
I hate that idea, children are human beings too. There is a difference to being well-behaved and being treated like less than human with no rights to even speak.
