Not being a Yankee fan, I would think if Santana could be had for Kennedy and Cabrera, they would be all for it.
I don't think that the Twins would do that deal however. I think the ask for Santana would be more like Hughes, Chamerlain and someone like Tabata or Sanchez.
If that was the deal, if I were a Twins fan, I would love it and if I were a Yankee fan, I would hate it.
Given the small market shrewdness of the Twins, there is no way they are on the losing end of a trade, especially with the Yankees.
For them it's, are you willing to lose on this deal for the sake of having the best pitcher in the majors.
I still think the Yankee's management is ok with that. Time will tell.
Edit: If the Yankees offer Cabrera and Kennedy and the Red Sox offer Ellsbury, Buchholz and another prospect, if you were Minnesota, which way would your head be turning.
If a team isn't willing to lose long term in this deal, they won't land Santana.

To be honest, I don't think it matters what Yankee fans are willing to "lose." This comes down to what the Twins want in return and how badly the Yankees want to keep Santana away from Boston...because if the Yankees don't make the bost offer someone else will and it'll probably be Boston. Johan will not be a free agent, the Twins are going to move him because no one wants to risk losing out on him before they ever had a chance to kick the tires. This trading opportunity may be the only chance the Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Dodgers or Angels have at getting Santana because when he's traded he'll be locked up long-term.
Boston has a better list of trade possibilities than the Yankees and for whatever reason, all I keep reading about is Yankees fans running their mouth about who is and isn't untouchable?!
Let's be honest...the only people on that Yankees roster who are "untouchable" are A-Rod, Jeter, Mariano and Posada. If the Yankees want to get Johan they're going to have to pay out the ear and that could include anyone from Wang to Hughes to Chamberlain to Kennedy to Cano to Sanchez to Cabrera and/or any combination of those guys.
Santana is a game-changing pitcher. Most of the guys on that list are not game changers. The Twins will set the asking price and the Yankees will either take it, or they'll miss out, PERIOD. The Red Sox have a deeper farm system and are more than willing to have a staff that leads off with Santana and Beckett.
And to the people who keep saying the Twins "can have" Giambi or Damon...what are you smoking?! The Twins can't afford those salaries, that's why they're trading Johan. Plus Giambi is off the books after this year and is a shell of what he used to be and Damon has no legs left and throws like a girl. What good do either of those old retreads do for the Twins?
Too many Yankees fans keep looking at this trade like they're doing the Twins a favor. The simple fact of the matter is that the Twins are going to get fat on this return...not the other way around. The Yankees have pushed people around for a long time in trades, but not this time. No way will the Yankees take a couple washed up position players that offer no value to the organization in the short or long-term.
I'd say they could get off cheap by giving up Wang and Cabrera/Cano and Sanchez...but if they want to hang onto Wang it's going to cost them two of the "big three young guns" and Cabrera.

(Not a Yankee fan nor a Yankee hater)
With resigning of Rodriguez, Rivera and Posada, I think the message, as it's always been for the Yankees, is clear. Win now. It's the ace of aces in Johan Santana.
They should make the deal or watch the BoSox continue what they hope to be a decade of AL East dominance. Don't forget that they are also in the hunt for Santana. There's already been one instance of being out bid for a starting pitcher and it resulted in the Red Sox winning the division race. Imagine what losing the bid for Santana head to head might result in.

To get something (Johan Santana) you have to give up something(Melky + Hughes+ Olendorf). That's the rule of the jungle. I wouldn't give up Kennedy I think he has more potential than Hughes.

Yeah right. They are not giving up Hughes. Melky and Kennedy are expendable. Yankee pitching is not fine right now. If it was fine we would have won a championship. Our pitching situation is not resolved until we win a ring.

The Twins are looking for a minimum of 2 top prospects (at least one pitcher) so the deal would be something like:
Choose 2 (one Pitcher)
Chamberlain
Hughes
Kennedy
Cabrera
Cano
and add a Bullpen arm to that deal.
On top of the deal, Santana's agent has hinted that he's looking for a new deal upwards of 120M for 6 years.

I would deal Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera, but not Jobs, Hughes or Cano. Otherwise, you are sacrificing your future.

Joba Chamberlain is the most covetted Yankees young arm right now. I wouldn't trade him but if its for Santana and youre the Yankees who has loads of $$$ you DO IT!
probably will take Joba, Hughes, AND CANO. I don't think Twins want Melky somehow. He isn't all that great if it werent for other stars.
Let's not kid ourselves here. Of all the young Yankee players, Robinson Cano is the one with true star power.

If the Yankees got their baseball operations advice from Yahoo Answers, they'd have zero championships and would have folded many many years ago.
Santana = 28 years old and the best pitcher in baseball this decade, bar none.
Hughes + Kennedy = 6 career victories
Cabrera = lifetime .275 hitter with 15 home runs
.
