Not in general but this one has been for various factors that have never been in play before.
For one no incumbent is running (the VP doesn't want to), so both parties are holding their primaries.
2nd, the primary season has been moved up to early January and February, before it used to run late January until June.
3rd, the President is so incredibly unpopular that the campaigns wanted to start the "bashing" early to build interest and momentum.

Yes - In fact all of the campaigns are too long. People are running for election as soon as they are elected. That is why there is so much issues about what looks good to the voters and not what is good for the voters. The problem with the long elections is that people tend to stop paying attention.

US Campaign period starts early even when the formal campaign period commences.had not yet started because the candidates wanted to have exposure early on.

But the majority of the population still can't name one democrat or republican running, or even one position that they support !
