The first job of any American President is to mend fences with the losing party. The President is elected to be the leader of the entire nation not just those who voted for him. A new President will need the help and support of both his own party and the good will of the loyal opposition if he wishes to be successful.
To those young people who have responded with such vitriol to this question I must point out this important fact. This is not a game. We are talking about selecting someone to be the single most important person in the world. It is not a winner take all, zero sum game. The President is President of all. He must wear many hats including Commander-in-Chief of the most powerful military in the world. He must be ready, willing and able to back down when that is the right thing to do or push the button when that is the right thing to do.
Most importantly, he must be a person of strong character with a thick skin and ability to bend but not break. Job one is to get all of America singing from the same hymn book. President Bush tried his best but was only partially successful. Bill Clinton was very accomodating to the Republican controlled Congress because he lacked any core values. The last really great President was Reagan who wrote the book on leadership. Look at the election numbers especially the re-election numbers. Virtually everyone in America was working together.
Finding areas to agree and compromise is job one for any President. Whether that can be accomplished while sticking to the President's agenda is what creates success.

To send out an envoy of ambassadors to every country to let them know that the United States is back and ready once again to make deals and get things done.
No matter how good our intentions are we can't get it done if we're alone.
