Regarding Haren: The A's are always willing to listen to offers, and that'll be no different this time, as Haren and rotation mate Joe Blanton will be coveted. The losers of the Santana Sweepstakes are logical landing spots for Haren (15-13, 3.07 ERA), plus perhaps the Diamondbacks, who have the prospects to deal for Haren but not the loot to pay Santana

Generally big stars like the ones listed above are traded for one of 3 reasons:

1. They are potential free agents, and their current team either can't afford to or doesn't want to resign them when their contract is up.

2. The are making big money on a team that is going nowhere and is trying to rebuild, so their team decides to trade them off for a few good prospects to aide in the rebuilding process (see Tejada)

3. The players attitude negativley affects the team and the management determines that his talent is not worth the trouble his attitude causes in the clubhouse. Not the case with any of these players, but certainly has happened before, such as when the Cubs traded Michael Barrett last year, despite having no real good replacement for him at the time

For Cabrera and Santana, it would be that the estimated price to sign them to a long term contract does not meet the needs of the team that they currently play for and they would like something other than draft picks for them, so they are on the block.

Tejada isn't really proforming at the price he is being paid and if the Orioles aren't competing, then why pay one guy all this money.

I don't know why you would think Haren, I hadn't heard that, but the only thing I could think is that Oakland is pitching rich and would trade Haren while his value is high for some much needed hitting.

The teams they play for don't like to spend alot of money in the first place but Cabrera, Santana, and Haren will bring them prospects that could keep them competitive for a few years since none will proably stay in town when they become free agents. The Orioles spend on one name free agent to try to get people in to the seats at Camden Yards. Problem is that they don't have any other good players to make them a contender.

Usually because it is time for a new contract and the current team is either not able or willing to negotiate in the salary range he could get from other teams. These teams will make every effort to make a trade and get something in return for their star player rather than nothing if he becomes a free agent.

in the case of the teams that those players you listed are on, they have no chance to win a world series with the players they currently have. the players listed are very good, most have big salaries, and their current teams can get good, young and CHEAP players out of these superstars. and there is the occasional guy that gets traded because he doesnt get along with the manager/other players/ or ownership.

There are 3 reasons sports stars are traded:

1) Money
2) Dissatisfaction with their organization
3) Ego

It comes down to money & some of these teams are either too cheap or don't want to pay their players so they will go someplace else where they will get more money.
