I bought a security light over the weekend at B & Q for just under £30 reduced to £15. I have been quoted "no more than £100" to fit it by a qualified electrician. Am I being ripped off or it that about right?

Considering a sparky's hourly rate, and the possibility that it may waste a morning for him, and given advertising, phone, vehicle, tax and insurance, public liability insurance, payments to keep up with training, niceic registration etc, it seems reasonable, I know gas fitters and electricians who are charging £600 per day, and they are always busy!

Depends on what's already there, wiring-wise. Neutrals looped into the existing switch with oval conduit then maybe as little as 30 minutes to fit, including drinking a cuppa tea.

Otherwise, chase out for new switch wire, shift gawd-knows how much furniture and carpets in the room above to access a neutral from the light fitting. Complete pain-in-the-backside job.
100 quid would be more than reasonable.

Well look at it like this he has gone to college /done an apprenticeship he is bringing his tools in his van with his experience to your house to put in a security light for no more than £100 out of which already gone is fuel £?,income tax £22 and over heads£? and he might end up being at your house for 2 or 3 hours. His work is Guaranteed. Now if something goes wrong with your car take it to garage pay anything from £40 to £125 per hour for someone to unbolt a part put new part on your car is Guaranteed until it gets off the property.

That sounds a bit much ask around family and friends for an electrician they have used and found reasonable and give them a call someone who has been recommended is usually the person for the job

Depends if it's just a replacement fitting or if it needs to be wired in anew, and what switching is required. £100 should cover all that and the work also. That's a bit over the top.

I think that;s appalling, get a decent quote from a registered electrician. These days I do not think its legal to do it yourself but its not difficult, you are being ripped off.

hate to say this but Golden's answer is about right ....first you cannot do it yourself ...and after its fitted the sparks should give you a test certificate to say its been fitted to the regs ..although most answers say its expensive ...you have not accurately described just where this light is to be fitted or how much work is involved ..so we can only guesstimate ...when i ask at my garage how much to change my headlights the said ..two hours work at £150 plus vat per hour !

unfortunately its juts not worth an elecitricians time and effort to do a job thats less than £80- £100

I would read the instructions and install it myself but if you are not confident enough then pay for someone else to do it.

If installed incorrectly you could get elctrocuted or create a fire hazard that could go off months down the line!
