donever ever pick them up by the tail. you break it .
i pick mine up by the back half of his shell. For feeding i use tweezers or a hemostat, you can get both for cheap at ebay. Also some good heavy duty gloves wont hurt either. maybe they have some with kevlar weaved in or fish fileting gloves - if it helps against cuts it could help against bites from smaller turtles.

Alligator snapping turtles are much easier to handle than common snappers. They dont have hardly any place they can bite you except right in front of there face. You can carry them by the back or sides of the shell, or bigger ones using the front and back of the shell. They cant pull there head inside far enough to bite your hand that is above the head.

Most people who work with snappers just practice safe handling and feeding techniques and do not need any special finger protection.

Quite frankly, if you do not know the techniques, or have not learned them hands-on with an experieded person, you really should not be keeping or working with a species like this.

You don't need protection,,,,Just pick it up by holding the end of the shell on top of the tail & the shell part on top of the head. That way it can't bite u.

If you are game , try an armor,,,,

I have both kinds of snappers and the guy who gave them to my husband and I told us to pick them up by the tail and keep them out from your side. We have had them for about 15 years.
