I read somewhere, I forget where, that the mosquito is probably the biggest killer in human history. Its strange something so small has caused so much devastation espicially as it never tries to kill us.

The mosquito is, in fact, named as the most deadly creature on the planet, However, the mosquito, per say, does not kill, but the virus that causes malaria does the actual killing. The mosquito is only the carrier.
The creature that kills the most people directly on this planet, is the virus. Although it is the smallest of living creatures, it is responsible for diseases like the common cold, the flu, hemmorhagic fever, dangai fever, HIV, AIDs, malaria, and many more. It is responsible for millions of deaths worldwide, and are considered, by some (me included), to be the biggest threat to mammalian existence on this planet. The Mountain Gorillas of Africa are nearly extinct because of a virus, named Ebola. Poaching and habitat loss are also contributing factors, but the Ebola virus is literally wiping out entire gorilla communities in a matter of weeks, and even days..
The wild mammal responsible for the most human deaths is between two different animals. The first is the hippopotamus, the second, also a native of Africa, the Cape Buffalo. Records of human deaths have been reported from both animals and tallies are close, but since there are many other purported deaths that are not recorded, the true killer king is debatable.
Other large animals that are responsible for many human deaths each year are the ones you would expect, the Tigers of India, lions of Africa, and crocodillians found in many parts of the world are the ones that come to mind.
Hope this answers your question!!!

The mosquito, by virtue of spreading malaria.
Statistically, you have more chance of being killed by lightning than by animals like snakes and sharks.
