Oh I can relate! We have a whole section in the garage of fixable appliances, vacuums Just about anything you can think of. I have resorted to just throwing things away when he isn't home and then replacing them.I have got to say that he is fully capable of fixing some of this stuff but just doesn't take the time to do it. The one I really like is...I see something in a store and he says " I can make that"! It took him 3 years to make my television cabinet, It got done because some relatives were coming to visit and he didn't want them to see our TV sitting on an end table. Took him 2 evenings to get it done. Once I got so angry at a vacuum not working I pitched it right out the back door and walked out...hopped myself in the car right to walmart.

we should not underestimate the knowledge gained from taking the whole house to pieces, many puzzles are solved, lesson are learned, and once understood reassembly is an anti-climax.
You should show more interest, "how does that work honey", "how do you put it back together", get him to show you, encourage instead of restricting him.
And if he messes up, wait till he goes to work, take the vacuum to be fixed, and pretend hubby fixed it, "it suddenly began working, oh you are clever"
You could him very happy with just a little tact!
regards,
Another Mr. fix it.

LOL! my dad is so like that! .... to the extent that we have a nickname for him behind his back! lol! we call him "Canada's worse handyman" (after a TV show)
My BF is also the exact same way but his has to do with gadgets. He has a degree in electrical engineering and he fixes every electrical appliance! OMG! my fear is that he'll make one small mistake which can possibly result in a house fire! (God forbid)
but yeah.... I'm basically surrounded by men like that in my life! ((sigh!))

Yes, I have one. Mr Pumpkin spends more time trying to fix things than they are worth.
And, I have to go get a new blender today that he "fixed" last week, the dumb thing blew up on me.
