If the US continues to throw billions of tax dollars at Iraq there must be some improvement.
I'm more concerned about our government doing something to improve the living standards of Americans. This isn't happening.

The thinking goes that the surge is working, but when we relax and/or send troops home, the insurgency will come back, maybe even stronger.
Vietnam is a shinning example of that.
We'd take an area, say its secured, move on to the next area, then the guerrillas would come back in. They knew they couldn't go head to head with us, so they created terror in the countryside. The only visible enemy was us since we wore uniforms and obviously most of us were not Vietnamese, yet the Vietcong could blend in easily. So the locals, having only one real target to end the bloodshed took it out on us.
I remember seeing a map in 1965 of S Vietnam where the USA had control in the local newspaper. A year later I saw an updated map and compared it to the old one. Were we had control had shifted and in many cases we had less. Yet the local newspaper insisted we were winning.
This kind of war and occupation is impossible to win.
What we have is a shot term win against eventual defeat.
Peace
Jim

So far, the political process in Iraq is in a state of disarray. The US is providing a very, very expensive police force in an effort to promote stability but no political progress has been made up to this point.
There are political benefits to the Bush administration to have reduced violence in Iraq but the billions of dollars that are being spent each week seem to be creating nothing more than a long-term occupation.

Yes things are improving. All the talk in the world can not match actually doing something. Words may soothe your conscience or bolster your point of view but they seldom change anything.
You don't build a house by setting around talking you get dirty and put the pieces together. When your done you are forgotten and those that set around talking take the credit.

Soon? Are you talking like within the next 10 years? There has been limited military improvements but still no political advancements and that is the key to any kind of long term stability.

Doubtful, until the Iraqi government gets its' turds in a herd there is not likely to be any substantial improvement. "Better" is also a relative term and its definition varies wildly depending on who is trying to make you believe what, so if Bushco is casting out the term with the rest of it's guppy food I am not feeding on it..

all any of us here know is what we're told, but I believe conditions are improving.
Even the traditional media is reporting that Democrats are adjusting political tactics because of the recent successes in Iraq.
Besides, now they have this thing called 'freedom'. Women can go to school and be seen outside the house without having to have a male escort. People can even listen to music. Even if the power grid isn't as stable, they're better off.
