You've hit the nail RIGHT on the head here! Of course, if that poor cow really DOES get punished, I wouldn't like to be one of that crowd over here (U.K.) ! ! !

When Gillian Gibbons asked six and seven year olds to choose a name for a teddy bear, the kids chose the name of a popular pupil at the same school, who, fortunately, has not incurred the wrath of the prophet Mohammed, despite having the same name. She explained to the kids what a democratic vote was, then arranged the election, Unfortunately, it will probably end up being a unique, never-to -be-repeated experience for these youngsters. The real hooh-hah started when the parents all got a letter explaining that "Mohammed, the teddy bear," would spend some time with each of the families, when photographs could be taken of the teddy and the families. Then, the pupils would write a diary, covering the the period of the visits.

This must be when one of the locals, bent on mischief, and with nothing better to do, decided to stick his oar in and cry Foul. I just hope that Gillian Gibbons thinks it was worth it.

Remember the old adage
"Wogs start at Dover".

This is a difficult one to answer without treading on sombodies toes but I'll have a go, trying to be as objective a possible.
I am neither a Christian nor a Muslim but I have read both books out of curiosity and to find out what both philosophies are all about.
In essence both books preach more or less the same things but just as the Christians in the early days went to extremes (Spanish Inquisition, the burning of witches and 'heretics', etc.) the Muslims are doing the same now and in a time where these practises are no longer acceptable.
The Christians have long realised that the Bible must not be taken literally but the text must be adapted to our modern and enlightened times.
The Muslims, on the other hand, take the Koran by the letter and the extremists read things into the various passages that are just not there and act on it in the ways we have all too clearly seen.
The Koran as well as the Bible teach respect, love and kindness to all living things and nowhere does the Koran state that it is ok to kill your daughter, chastise is the word used.
What this business with the teddy bear is all about I just cannot imagine. Perhaps it has to do with us Europeans or Americans having looked upon teddy bears as childhood friends with children's names - a concept perhaps not grasped by the Islamic peoples and misconstrued as blasphemy.....unless it is yet another way of telling us Westerners that our ideas and our very presence in Islamic countries is not welcome.
Yes, I do see a problem here - and it's not just a slight one but it is one that we will never be able to resolve.

The Flawless, The Source Of Peace And Perfection (As-Salaam)
59:23 God is He, than Whom there is no other god;- the Sovereign, the Holy One, the Source of Peace (and Perfection), the Guardian of Faith, the Preserver of Safety, the Exalted in Might, the Irresistible, the Supreme: Glory to God! (High is He) above the partners they attribute to Him.

Interpretation:
(His essence is free from imperfections, His attributes are perfect, and He commits no evil. Everything that exists that is flawless is attributed to Him and originates from Him. He causes no harm to anything and He gives peace to His creation.)

Practical Application:
(To apply this attribute to life, believers’ hearts should be free from deceit, hatred, envy, and evil intent. They should be untainted by sins and forbidden actions. The believer should call for this name to be upon them. The believers who apply these values to their lives will go to God with a flawless heart.)

Only extremist and fanatics slit their daughters' throats. But your argument is fallacious at best.

Also, if you are practicing Islam, why on Earth would you name your teddy bear Muhammed when you know for a fact that Muhammed is your prophet. No child in their mind would do that because it is really common sense.

It's about as okay as judging a religion whose traditions, histories, and rites you only know from what television and the internet tells you about... not anything that you researched independently and without bias.

It's never okay to slit your daughter's throat. However, the actions of any extremist branch of a religion are usually ones that we don't agree with.

One important cultural tick in all Islamic faiths is that you don't idolize the prophet Mohammed. In fact, you don't idolize anyone PERIOD. Why? Because you shouldn't be idolizing any man, the only thing you should idolize is god, and god is an abstract idea, with no form. This is no different from Christianity. Do you ever see an accepted representation of God in mainstream Christian religions? We don't have a physical representation for God and neither do they. This is evident in Islamic architecture and art.. which consists mostly of geometric patterns, and heavily avoids the use humans in art.

However, what one extremist does, shouldn't symbolize an entire system of religions. There are over 1.7 billion muslims, and very, very few of them are in the extremist, conservatist(reactionist) group.

I know I would feel pretty offended if I told people that I'm Christian, and they asked me why I didn't have a mullet, a southern accent, a picture of Billy Graham in my wallet, and a bible with me. It's the same with Muslims, you can't stereotype 1 billion people based on the actions of a very few... if that were the case, then Americans would be nothing more than short, fat, blonde Texans.

Not really. I don't live there so it causes me no grief. It's up to them what stupid laws they make just like it's up to us to mess up our country and future generations.

Um, Mr. Bean?...That was the Salem Witch Hunt in 1692!...OVER 300 years ago!. You are welcome to join the rest of us in the year 2007 whenever you're ready.

Isnt' it sad when people resort to events that took place CENTURIES ago as a counter arguement for Muslims' Dark age behavior TODAY?.

...Islam like any religion is warped by its Fundamentalist leaders...
All religions claim to be about peace and love but the extremists then twist it to suit their own agendas...
Christians have done far worse in the name of God....in fact the bible tells us to act aggressively towards any other religion....

Death for Blasphemy

One day a man who had an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father got into a fight with one of the Israelite men. During the fight, this son of an Israelite woman blasphemed the LORD's name. So the man was brought to Moses for judgment. His mother's name was Shelomith. She was the daughter of Dibri of the tribe of Dan. They put the man in custody until the LORD's will in the matter should become clear. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and tell all those who heard him to lay their hands on his head. Then let the entire community stone him to death. Say to the people of Israel: Those who blaspheme God will suffer the consequences of their guilt and be punished. Anyone who blasphemes the LORD's name must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the LORD's name will surely die. (Leviticus 24:10-16 NLT)

40 lashes is mild punishment compared to this.......its still wrong in my opinion....
