How can I put this... DO NOT WRITE A CHECK YOU DON'T HAVE FUNDS TO COVER.

That's a really bad habit to get into. It could take them a week to cash, or they could do it that day.

Re-read your lease. You really have no grace period? That sucks. I would do one of the following...

(1) ask if I could move my due date to the 5th of the month. Some landlords will. Some won't.

(2) Start putting aside money so you can pay your rent on the day it's due without having to wait for a paycheck.

Most checks these days are processed (against your account) the day they're deposited or the next day at the latest. Don't risk it, pay the late fee. It's generally less than the total fees you'll pay for a bounced check and it won't go on your credit record like a bad check can.

The days of "check float" are long past.

best thing to do to avoid late payments is..ta da..pay on time. save up some money, dont spend so much each month so you can assure that you have the money to pay when you agreed to pay when you signed your lease. They usually probably cash them as soon as they get them
