It is NOT illegal to have a pet dog in Iceland! Where did you hear that?

If you live in a town/city in Iceland you need to register your dog, pay for a permission for having a dog and have your dog go through a health check once per year. If you live in an apartment building where you share parts of the building (commonly entrance, stairs, corridors) you need your neighbours' concent for having a dog, since the dog will be going through that common property daily.

I think the rules are different and more liberal in rural areas.

Because the barbarians in the neighboring country, Noticeland, eat dogs. After the Great Dog Raids of 1963, mass suicides began to occur due to sorrow caused by pet loss. In an attempt to reduce these suicides, Iceland made it illegal to have a pet dog.
