Teddy bears are lovable. Kids love them. There is nothing derogatory about them. What is the problem in naming one Mohammed??? If it has to be connection to the revered Prophet, isn't this a sign of love???

This is not a case of like when the British named their pigs Adolf, which was very justifiable.

I do not understand why the Sudan people are upset.
They should be happy & perhaps a little amused at their children's innocence. Why the horror of a flogging over something so innocent?

THIS IS A TOTAL FARCE

it was the kids in the school who called the bear mohammed

so shouldn't it be them who are getting flogged ??

wish i hadn't said that , some crazy religious zealot will probably think its a good idea

apparently it was an ex teacher who complained , someone with an Axe to grind

what is sad and frightening is that it was acted upon

i guess next time theres a famine or a flood they wont be wanting our dirty christian money

or is that different somehow ???

all the best
Ian

To those people who say Christians wouldn't be happy if someone called a teddy bear or a pig Jesus:
Firstly, we are only talking about a soft cuddly teddy here. Not a pig. There's a big difference.
Secondly, if someone went to a Christian country and called even a pig Jesus, it would be frowned on at worst. No imprisonment, no threat of corporal punishment.
I understand that all the parents of the 20+ children involved in the naming of this bear were happy with it. Sounds like some bureaucrat has decided to take things a bit further.
I hope this lady is released, she went to Sudan to HELP people, she is guilty of nothing but naivety

Luci: we have different strokes for different folks. That teacher, among all her innocence and being naive, should have asked or checked out what would have happen. Especially after the cartoons hit the media.

I feel for her but she's dealing with a different type of society that may never come into the light of a modern society.
They still publicly lash women, they still chop off hands for stealing and some horrors that can't be mentioned here.

With a society like this, you walk very quietly or stay home, that's the alternative. I would believe that to live here would be living on potato chips and have to walk without breaking any, very carefully. I wouldn't be able to do it. Good luck to her.

If you go into a foreign country and do not respect the local culture or laws then you are at the mercy of the host countries legal process. That is of course if you dont have Gordon Brown as your best pal and Richard Branson to fly you out free of charge. This poor woman need consular help - there must be a diplomatic way of settling this so that both countries have a win win and save face??? Surely the poor woman cant get whipped due to ignorance???

Wouldn't you expect a Christian to be offended over a teddy bear named "Jesus"? It implies that their savior was an animal...it's disrespectful if you look at it from that perspective. People are generally cynical, not optimistic.
