non-fiction narrows the field

my 1st suggestion is the bible, the most referenced work in Western literature. Even from a non-religious point of view, it's literary influence is unsurpassed by any other single work in Western literature.

2) Any good inclusive world history book. I have never read one, but this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Study_of_History is supposed to be tops

3) This looks really good (comprehensive easy-to-understand science book)
