This is a question that I've been pondering over for quite some time now.

The answer is actually really easy. They SHOULD, but they WOULDN'T. Healthy "fast food" would never sell! Fast food is so popular out everywhere is because people like it, regardless of whether they're healthy or not. It's because they're so unhealthy that they taste good (example: amount of salt and sugar in food)!

Healthy food (like organic food and vegetables and whatnot) would never be as big a hit as unhealthy junk food. People wouldn't buy it. That's a given.

Take a look at Burger Kings, KFC, McD and etc. Do they look healthy to you? No. Does it look like the level of healthiness actually affects the sales?

I didn't think so.

I have been living in Korea and fast food does not exist very well. There are many cheap restaurants. America is all about capitalism and proper food sanitation. These things come at a price. Most fast food in the US is produced via a factory style so it's cheap to dish out at low prices. Healthy food needs to be prepared and is a more legnthier process so the costs are more. Mind you healthy food is nearly as cheap but a dollar burger is so much cheaper than a 3 dollar sandwich that you opt for the lower price. That and quantity. 1 salad for 3 dollars is less in quantity than 3 hamburgers at 3 dollars. Ever hear,"your eyes are bigger than your stomach?"

Pret a Manger are pretty good, not cheap but you get a decent product.

Subway are good value but I'm not convinced that they're particuarly healthy. Especially when the dressings have been added and I'm never sure about the age of some of the stuff, and the 'salad' bits aren't great.

The only thing that should be next to McD, and KFC would be a H24 Stomach pumping unit.

The answer is based on the free market. There is not a large demand for "healthy food". People make choices every day based on their wants, needs, and desires. One of the main factors in where people choose to eat is taste. People like the taste of burgers and fries!

If you think that a healthy food place would be profitable, you are free to spend your money (or gather investors) and open a restaurant! If it is successful you can expand and eventually franchise your idea! Rather than asking why "they" don't do something, you are free to do it yourself! If it is as good an idea as you think, you will make millions!!!

Basically, I agree with you BUT

They would open such a chain if it would make a profit.

They sell Junk food because it sells!

Your best bet is that national chain that sells sandwiches / rolls. ---- Subway

One chain specialised in healthy baked potato meals-- but I aint seen a massive expansion of this franchise.

Greg Wallace was on TV this morning in a prog. about junk food.

Basically, people get attracted to high fat, high sugar and high salt foods.

If healthy take aways would make a profit, they would be everywhere!

because fast food is crap, crap is cheap to make, therefore money makers!

quality healthy food costs more, therefore we cant possibly get it at a great price... thats why when i go to LaBou (im in Northern California) i pay $10-15 for a "healthy" to go lunch. its ridiculous, so i mostly eat crap on a daily basis... thats all i can afford!

Because kids wouldn't bully their parents into going to getting them a smoothie and a salad as much as they would a Happy Meal and a milkshake.

I wish they would, but if they sold good quality food, and sold it cheap, they would not make a profit.
McDons makes a profit, and look how cheap their food is,they are practicaly giving it away.so think how cheap it must be BEFORE they sell it.utter rubbish.
