I just got a positive for pregnancy urine test but my period is due in 3 more days.
How soon can I take a first sonogram to be sure?
When normally is the first sonogram taken?
Thanks!

congratulations!

Well it depends on your doctor and what their protocol is. If you know when your last menstrual period (LMP) was then you may not have a scan done till 12weeks to check that all is progressing well.

Other doctors prefer you to have a 'dating scan' to check your dates and make sure how many babies there are. Usually this isn't done till 6-8wks (approx) so that it is easier to see the baby and by then there should be a heartbeat (after 7 weeks - so personally I would wait till then anyway) . If you have a scan earlier that 6 weeks they will have to do an internal vaginal scan which is more uncomfortable and invasive.

The other way to determine accuracy of the pregnancy test is your doctor will order a blood test and this will confirm it with the level of HCG in your blood stream. The reading off that will give them an indication of how far along you are, As well as testing for all sorts of other things at the same time like STD's, HIV, immunities and antibodies in your system, blood group etc...

I would wait 2 more weeks till booking in for your 1st pre-natal visit (6wks pregnant or 2 weeks after a missed period) and then your doctor will be able to send you for all the tests you need. Make sure you have something to drink before going as they will also want a urine sample too.

Best of luck and congratulations

I just had my first scan yesterday as I wasn't 100% sure of my LMP and I am 7wks and 2 days pregnant!

some docs will do a sonogram late in being pregnant to 'verify position and weight.' for sure this kind of test is incomprehensible. (position will be determined by feeling the tummy, and ultrasounds are VERY innaccurate in determining fetal weight, and have a tendency to bring about many unnecessary inductions and c-sections because the overall practitioner guesses that toddler is 'too huge.') And definite, some docs robotically do a test at each visit, and occassionally a lady has a medical favor for a late test. yet there is frequently no medical reason to do ANY ultrasounds even as pregnant, and tremendously no longer in the course of the basically top weeks.
