I would get one done after you have the child also ask for the immunisation against cervical cancer. It is always a good idea to have a pap smear done just in case there are any STD's I have only been with two men in my life one an ex boyfriend and now my current partner of 7 years and every couple of years I have a papsmear, I have a friend who thinks she's invincible and immune to getting an STD because she hasn't had that many partners but in reality she could have an STD and not even know about it. You want to be as healthy as possible for your children.

Okay, I'll be the one to scare the crap out of you!!!
I had a couple of minor abnormal pap smears over the last few years but nothing to worry about as the smears weren't showing pre-cancer cells
...... but 12mths ago I had a pap smear test 18mths after my last one (instead of the 2years they recommend) after I had a feeling something wasn't right.
Well my intuition was right and I had a CIN 3 (severe dysplasia) pre-cancerous abnomality which needed surgical removal. It had only taken 18mths to go from nothing to severely pre-cancerous. Had I left it that 6 more months I would be going through cancer treatment now.
I have two children and am now 7 weeks pregnant (something that would not have happened if I had gotten cancer) and I am so glad I trusted my instincts and just had it done.
My mother had uterine cancer when she was 30 years old and had to have a hysterectomy and chemotherapy treatment and thankfully is cancer free for 20+ years now.
I was scared out of my brain when I got the test results thinking about what my children would've missed out on and my husband, but am so very lucky to be healthy and pregnant now.
You can have pap smears when you are pregnant; i had one with both my previous pregnancies (not this one because I only had one 3mths ago) and they do not cause any harm to you or the baby.
I will have to have them every 12mths for the rest of my life now to be 100% that nothing has grown back but it is a small price to pay to be cancer free.
If it is caught early it is very easily treatable so ask you doctor to perform one at your next appointment. It could save your life!!!
Also, cervical cancer is not hereditary (unlike breast cancer) so it doesn't matter about your family history. It is caused by the Human Papaloma Virus (HPV) which can be transmitted from sexual intercourse or from mother to child at birth or possibly even blood transfusions. There are immunisations available for women for the virus. Just like getting a tetnus or flu shot, you can get the cervical cancer HPV shot.
Don't waste time and gamble with your health, have a smear done. Its so easy and quick. Think about what your family would be missing if something happened to you???
Best of luck!

They don't do them while you are pregnant in the UK? That's interesting as we do them here in the US during pregnancy, maybe because we have noncompliant patients here that wont get them done when they arent pregnant (sound familiar)?
Cervical cancer is not hereditary necessarily as it is usually caused by HPV. Many women have HPV and show no symptoms. I have seen women your age with abnormal paps and have biopsies done and come out ok.
Not much you can do now about it but promise yourself you are going to get it done after the baby.

it's ok. Really, it is.
At your age, the incident of cervical cancer is very low. the reason for having the smear test is to be able to detect cancer early to get a better chance of good treatment. But having the smear test will not decrease your risk of getting cervical cancer in the first place.

I too did not have a smear until earlier this year (I'm 28), I blatantly ignored the letters, only on being tested for fertility problems did I have it done.
Everything was fine.
That will not be the same for everyone, but try not to stress, wait until you have the baby, then have one done.
Good luck.

Jeez, you are just being paranoid. A pap smear is a smart thing to get but it isn't necessary. Are you one of those people that just has to find something to worry about? The chances of you having anything wrong is a million to one.
One other thing, the stress from worrying about stupid things is worse for your baby then just about anything else you can do. So quit it.

the lack of having a smear test shouldn't affect your baby at all, but i definitly recommend you get 1 done asap after bubs is born. And yes it is stupid of you not to have had one so far, as the virus that causes cervical cancer is sexually transmitted NOT hereditary, and is almost never found during an std check. Please for your kids sake get it done, because they're gonna need their mum their as they grow up!

Please don't panic. Look forward to the birth of your beautiful baby. You have done nothing wrong. Think that 100 years ago, they did not have these tests available, and people and babies were still born healthy.
Just get it done a few month's after baby comes, And enjoy the newborn. Don;t make yourself feel guilty.
