Hi all just looking for some advice about my mirena iud. ive had it in for almost 2 years now and it has given me nothing but trouble with my period i mean yeah it prevents pregnancy which is a good thing, but ever since i got it in i bleed heavily and i mean really heavy for 10 days every month! and also i get scared when i have sex cause sometimes between periods i bleed during sex. ive talked to doctors and they all tell me that it will settle down but im really at a loss im sick of it but i dont know of any other contraception thats as safe as this, id forget to take the pill, condoms are useless... any advice i would really appreciate it.

I didn't get used to Mirena, i have expulsed it and i start to bleed even much more, and my gyno advice me Mirena to stop my bleeding bcs she tought was correct to my problem, but with Mirena i start even to bleed even more like 15 days of period:(
My advice is going soon gyno and take off Mirena as you dont get along with it, and see everything is ok and try Implanon or another implant in the skin that last more than 2 years..
Relax, but soon go doctor, good luck:)

Ask your doctor about something like Depo-Provera or even a birth control method called Implanon to see what they say to see if these might be some other options for you.

I did remember hearing in the commercials for Mirena that a known side effect of the product is breakthrough bleeding. Definitely please let the doctor know that you can't deal with this much more and want to consider something different.

I had the mirena iud in place for approx. 5 months in 2006. I never did stop bleeding. The doctors kept reassuring me that it would stop. It never did. Finally I had enough, told the doctor to take it out. 3 days after removal, I stopped bleeding and have been regular with my cycle ever since.
