My understanding is that morality is the difference between right and wrong. Ethics is a set of practical rules defining what is right and wrong.

So that morality is a more basic level of understanding I would expect everybody to attain as they grow up. Someone might be desribed as immoral if they were doing things they knew to be wrong. However different people will have different ethics depending on what they were taught in their various cultures and religions.

Your ethical rules allow you to do bad things if you can justify them in some way. e.g. it might be ok to kill a terrorist if that would save hundreds of lives.

In the times that religions ruled nations, the morality of that religion was the law and any contravention a crime against that law. Ethics are a personal certainty regarding what would lead to a wrong (not a crime) for an other. For example if I failed to inspect personally all components of a used car because I am not legally obliged to, and someone is hurt, that is a wrong, but it is not crime and therefore my liability is protected against forced redress for the wronged person. If my personal ethics command that I know and forewarn of the danger, that is my ethic, which others may know as exceedingly good, but which is yet to be accepted as a legal obligation enforced of the state power.

The Will is positive, the Judgment is negative.

I would say that morality is more broad based, as in the collective moral values of a culture or sub culture, whereas ethics are how those moral values translate into policy statements on the part of an individual, a business or a society or government operating within that society or cultural group ...

You're right, morality and ethics are very synonymous.

But I think ethics is more general than morality for it applies to all humans, animals, plants, land, etc.

When we talked about "environmental ethics" as an example it is awkward to say it as "environmental morality".

Is it ethical to kill a plant/animal as your source of food? This may be tolerable.
Is it moral to kill a plant/animal as your source of food? This one sounds awkward.

This may imply that morality has more connection only with the human behavior and activities while ethics apllies to humans and non-humans.

Definitions:
Ethics as a study of morality’s effect on conduct- the study of moral standards and how they affect conduct (takes a singular verb) Also called moral philosophy
Ethics as a code of morality - a system of moral principles governing the appropriate conduct for an individual or group (takes a plural verb)

Morality as an accepted moral standards - standards of conduct that are accepted as right or proper
Morality as how right or wrong something is the rightness or wrongness of something as judged by accepted moral standards
Morality as a moral lesson - a lesson in moral behavior

"Morality" tends to intersect more often with religion, and hence says a lot about metaphysics.

"Ethics" can be informed by religion, but can also be informed by other things, so it doesn't go nearly as far in a metaphysical direction.

Bottom line biggest difference? The question of how they respectively handle (or remain silent on) metaphysics.
