I spent the Thanksgiving holiday with my boyfriend and his family this year. While there, he mentiond to me that they were all talking about putting a little money together to get me somethng nice for Christmas or to each get me something small.....well, after hearing this I decided to get them all giftcards for Christmas....
Wil they think I am just trying to buy my way into the family, or will they see it as a nice gesture?
Also, will they expect the same or more next year?

Thanks for any help/opinions you can give. :)

I don't want to be viewed as trying to buy my way in...I just don't want to look cheap if they do buy me something for Christmas.

If you feel like you want to give them gift cards, then do it.

As your potential future family, they shouldn't 'expect' anything of you, other than to be good to their son.

I am sure that they realize that you are unfamiliar with their needs or wants. Just buy some boxes of candy or nuts.

Wrap the gift cards and tape them on top. Then wrap them all very nicely. Your gifts will appear to have more thought put into them that way.

That is how I do for the teenagers and young adults in my family. All of them love it. Sometimes I even make money fans and tie them into the bow on top of the candy or nuts.

I wouldn't of gotten gift cards because i think they are to impersonal (I have brought them for my hubby and brother but that's b/c they were stationed overseas and could use them at the local shop) I would of either baked (shows effort) or gotten small gifts for each. When i met my in laws the first time i brought his mom a cup and some flavored coffee from the dollar store and some biscuits and wrapped it pretty, and for his aunt i gave her a bottle of wine (buy in bulk and its cheaper).

EDIT : sorry that sounded like i was looking down on what you have already done. I would though try to dress them up a bit, better than just the card.

As to the following years, we have gotten the parents framed pictures of us and the kids or something in that nature. although i think hubby is going to spurge on them this year.

See what his family traditions are my mom's side draws names for gift exchanges my dad's just meets for brunch, hubby's mom (and her family) draws names too (for extended family aunts uncles cousins ect). and we haven't talked to his dad for like 3 yrs so don't really know what he does

I think that they will think that you are nice. They will think that you appreaciate them and care , if I were you I would send a giftcard.
