The base housing has a very long waiting list and I am concerned if we can't live on base, what will that be like and will we be able to find a house or apartment in our price range? Also I have dogs and I have heard it is next to impossible to find a rental that allows pets. Anyone have any advice?

the dogs thing will definitely put a HUGE crimp in your choices on and off base. do NOT bring King size beds or oversized furniture. it will NOT fit and each Japanese home has at least one tatami room, and those puppies are expensive to replace or repair.. and nothing heavy can go on them, as they are made of woven grass.

expect the average apartment to be UNDER 1000 Sq. ft. depending on your paygrade, the OHA ceiling is NOT very high and will not get you much. for instance, we were O1 and it was less than Y$200,000/month( at the time, under $2kUS) most homes that were large enough to fit all our stuff were more than that.

I actually had a friend who had a dog and was looking for an apartment-- and you are right. It is almost impossible unless you have the extra dollars to spend on apartments that allow pets, and being able to deal with neighbors dogs barking 24/7. My friend finally had to leave the dog at her parents' house. Unless you buy a house, most of the rental apartments will not allow pets especially dogs and cats.
