They move east to west in low latitude and southwest to northeast in middle latitudes, by a process known as recurvature. If I had to take a pick for an average, I'd pick southeast to northwest (not one of the choices). You can look at maps of historical tracks at http://weather.unisys.com/hurricane/index.html

They almost always move more-or-less east to west. A lot of the hurricanes that hit the U.S. form off the west coast of Africa, and move west until they get into the warmer waters of the Gulf Stream.
