What year are most Western movies based on?

Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but i was wondering what year were these movies based on ? And where exactly ?

As in most movies the gun used is the Colt Peacemaker which was developed in 1872 and accepted by the army in 1873, I would say the 1880's.

My guess would be around 1870's to 1890's.
