The UK launched the HMS Dreadnought in 1906, a ship who's name came to symbolize big ironclads with huge guns.

France launched the first ironclad in the mid 1850s however, the first complete and serviceable ironclads were launched by the South with their Merrimack and then the North with the Monitor. Both proved their worthiness during the great battle they fought which came to a draw. The Monitor sank in a bad storm shortly thereafter but it led the way to the first revolving turret. I am sorry I do not know the exact year the battle occurred however it can be looked up easily enough. It happened at about the middle of the Civil War. From that battle on the all wooden warship was a relic.
