The Season MVP award is supposed to go to the player who in the leagues eyes, was most valued to their team as a whole. When you can point a finger and say "This guy won games for that franchise this year". I do think, however, that it has slightly gone down the statistical slide, giving the edge to a player who looks better on paper. This year Tom Brady seems to be the odds on favorite to win it, as he's having a fantastic year. The question I would be asking, though, is he as key to his team as say a Brett Favre is to Green Bay's sudden winning streak?

Its a popularity contest, in all sports. Look at the NBA, where Kobe was considered an MVP candidate, when it was actually Shaq that was the team's most valuable player.

Look at baseball, where pitchers never win MVP, but any analyst will tell you that "pitching is what wins World Series."

And in football, its who is more popular, not who is more valuable. Remember the year after the Rams won the Super Bowl and the year after Kurt Warner won the MVP, and they gave the award to Marshall Faulk, even though the Eagles had become a one-man team under Donovan McNabb? McNabb was easily the team's most valuable player, but the more popular Faulk won the award.

Or how Peyton Manning ever won the award. Obviously, all these years its been Marvin Harrison that was the team's most valuable player; how's Peyton doing now that Harrison's out? Not very good, huh? 6 INTS in one game? But Manning is one of the most popular players in the game, because of his commercials and whatnot, so he won the award 2 years in a row, even though its obviously Harrison's presence on the field that makes Manning play as well as he does.

The MVP award should be renamed.

Popularity contest. Look at MLB. In the NL a guy who wasn't even the best player on his team beat a guy who had 2/3 of the triple crown. Does the player have to be on a playoff team? The NFL isn't as bad I mean LT deserved it last year and Alexander also probably deserved his as well.

MVP should be, on a team level, the player on that team, were he NOT there, the team would be like Miami is THIS year. On the League level, the MVP would/should be the player who BEST exemplifies the the spirit and sportsmanship of the NFL shield. NOT financially, OR a "popularity" contest!!!!

That's not the way I'm seeing it. The writers seem to pass over Yankees players (except Alex Rodriguez) because, "he plays for the Yankees. They are real good so he not as good as he seems." Jeter has been robbed of two MVPs. The Red Sox seem to be the beneficiary of such thinking. (Mind, I think the writers are totally whack and ought not have complete control over postseason awards or the Hall of Fame.) Having said all that, even when I disagree with their choices, ultimately the winner of the award -- whichever it is -- is close enough to be respected. Pedroia was the MVP winner his year. No sense going back and splitting hairs from a bald man. And he deserves the respect for the accomplishment.

any award that is not given out to player that has the best statistical year is a popularity contest, also I think postseason should play a factor in deciding. in baseball if they had taken the postseason into account, Beckett would have ran away with the Cy young.

no it goes to best player on the best team half the time. but in most cases could win without that player. the true mvp this yr should be derek anderson or albert haynesworth. with out those guys, those teams could easily be the dolphins.
