It all depends on the size of the blocks. Generally, about 8 blocks equals a mile where I live. so 42 divided by 8 equals 5.25. You could drive and count how many blocks in you neighborhood = one mile. Then if the other blocks are the same length, figure it out from there. You could just drive the 42 blocks and check the car odometer too.

Most cities are laid out at 12 blocks to a mile. In these cities 42 blocks = 3 1/2 miles.
(In my home town they used 16 blocks to the mile, so if the town had had 42 blocks, it would have been 2 5/8 miles.)

It is about 50 blocks (+/-) which is 2 1/2 miles between 60 Lafayette to 42nd-Grand Central. It would take about 45 minutes to 1 hour to walk (if you walk at an even pace). It would be easier if you took the subway. Either walk down Lafayette St to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall and take an uptown 4 or 5 train to 42nd St-Grand Central, or walk up Lafayette St to Canal St and take an uptown 6 train to 42nd St-Grand Central (you could switch to the 4 or 5 at 14th St). [60 Lafayette is about in between the 2 subway stops (Brooklyn Bridge and Canal St). [Note on the edit - I did a count on the blocks using a street map and adjusted the count from 40 to 50 blocks).

Lets say each house is about 60 feet of frontage making 300 feet or 100 yeard, so about 4200 yards or 2 and half miles or so.
