does anyone know how to roast chestnuts? we don't have a fireplace, so is there a way to do it in the oven? how do you know when they're done? thank you!

If you roast them in the oven first you wash them then slice a small x in the middle of the shell. They are done when they are hot and the x has opened up a bit. You can also bbq them if you have no fire place. Just wrap them in tin foil and turn them every so often until they are hot. No need for an x but it makes it easier to peel

GReat question. SInce I grew up with a pecan tree in my back y ard - chestnuts were not our favorites, but we did eat the heck out of some pecans. I remember using the tools to crack those suckers in half and pull the 'meat' out whole. We would have pounds and pounds to sell and to use throughout the year.
