record wise of those top 6 teams in each conference go as this:
NFC 47-19
AFC 49-17
at the moment, we see the AFC having the better record. however, i believe that the two conferences are in fact dead even in terms of strength. the AFC indeed has the best team in New England. however, the NFC has more elite teams. the Steelers proved they are overrated and will take more losses soon. 3-0 against Miami??? come on.....the NFC is improving every year, and every week. no doubt about it, last year and the 5 years before that the AFC was far more superior then the NFC. however, the NFC is showing that they are catching up. history shows that it goes in cycles, and it is starting to change this season.

The AFC is a lot tougher to me. You can look at the teams in the AFC playoff race at the moment and see that things may change by season's end even though the conference seem to have the 5 best teams in the NFL. Look at the teams that are not on the list that still pose a threat to the teams record and could compete whith the NFC and be right in the middle of the playoff hunt of the NFC. You have Tennessee, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Denver, Kansas City, and Buffalo. There are only 2 teams that could truly compete with the AFC playoff list at the moment and that's Green Bay and Dallas. I don't think anyone from Seattle on down would be in the AFC playoff picture it they were in the league right now.

The AFC is tougher and has been for the last 10 years. This year with Dallas and Green Bay winning it is a closer match then it has been in a while, but New England and a healthy Colts team can beat any team in the NFC any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Well it all depends on how you look at it the AFC appears to be the Better division But the NFC actually has a better percentage rating than the AFC and if the Pats were to loose a game the NFC would definatly have to be taken as more of a threat than they were befor the Pats/Colts game

I am a fan of the New York Giants, and the American Conference is much better. Only Dallas and Green Bay has a chance to win the Super Bowl from the NFC. Heck, Cleveland has a better chance of winning than most of the NFC except for the Packers and Cowboys. BTW, ELI MANNING SUCKS!

As a Green Bay Packer i must stand by the NFC but at the same time im a realist, the AFC is by far the strongest conference in football.... the thing is you cant look at the records but the records between the conferences and i dont know the exact records but i know the AFC is actually winning..... but you also have to look at the bigger picture..... who has won more superbowls in the past years

It's a cyclical thing, right now the AFC is stronger. It was the NFC for a long time before that. Really, though, the drop off between the top two teams in each conference is pretty steep.

I like the way you put your question together, so I'm going to use it directly in my answer.
I would say the AFC is tougher and here's why.
If you're 1 thru 6 lists played each other, where the No. 1's each played each other and the No. 2's each played each other and so on. That in my opinion, the No. 4 Bucs would be the only NFC team that would win the seeded head-to-head matchup.
But of course, you got to play the games, don'tchya.

I believe that the AFC has a beter record for the top teams, but in head to head compatition, between the AFC and NFC, the NFC has a better record, to me that says the the NFC is the stronger confrence

I think the AFC still has the better teams. Even though it has closed somewhat this year. Last year it seemed like a free for all for the last spot in the NFC wild card race.
