If you are a guy...then you do not want to come off as a insensitive male. The best way is to do it in person because they deserve it since they have invested time in the relationship. It is not an easy thing to do, but you will be remembered as a caring person regardless of the break up.
State that it is a personal decision and do not accuse the person of any wrong doing...even if you do not see yourself with that person in the future. It is important to give basic personal reasons such as income..future goals...not ready to commit, but do not release too much....it can confuse or anger a female. Now, always remember that you do not move on to the next best thing...it is always just the next thing...no one is perfect...Good Luck!
