Well the south had a hard time letting go of their racist views, so many are the grandchildren of former slave owners, KKK members...I tell ya. Sedalia Mo, is one of the worse places to live on earth.
In Texas it;s bad once u step outside of the Major cities, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Other wise it's cowboy and indian all the way.....

I think the North has always been in some ways even more racist than the South. The South is not like the TV shows.

The South is known for it's past racial divide but T.V. does overdo it. It's still racist but not to extreme it was say 20-50 years ago. Some places are a no go zone but overall Depends on what town or city you land in. Stay out of rural southern towns to be safe and small cities.

Well, I live in a diverse crowded area in the northeast, and over here people don't really care about you in general. They won't ask nearly as many questions, talk to you about your background, etc. They don't even smile and say hi how are you. People just live their lives without noticing anyone else.
When I traveled to southern states, people were very nice to me and they were curious about my name/background. I got the impression that some people thought I was strange, but I didn't experience racism even once. I wouldn't say that the south is racist, but most places in the south are less diverse than the north, so the homogenity there might confuse people into thinking that southerners are racist.

No. Not that the South isn't racist, because it most definitely is: I was born in Texas, and raised there and in Arkansas.
The media - especially TV - always, and I mean ALWAYS distorts, over exaggerates and generally misrepresents almost everything, to a degree where the reality of it is almost impossible to determine.

No you got just as many radicals up north and out west as anywhere. After the Civlil War the carpetbaggers stole everything, that's why so many companies up north own million and millions of acres of land here. The only thing they had left where the American Indians, African Americans and the white folks and they had to work together. I remember when I went to work for a compnay in Illinois. My boss took me riding and mentioned the klan up theere and then pointed out different houses where the person got it from the mafia. So in answer to your question no, but there are fruitckes all over and they come in every color, race , sex, party and what ever. take care. case in point today some mentioned that Senator Trent Lott was racist, well he always won in his state and even in the counties where there was a minority majority. Go figure. Take care.

In my experience the south is no worse than the north these days, I'm a biracial person who grew up in Michigan and was treated very badly by both worlds, i was stationed in north Carolina for most of my time in the military and now live in Mississippi, and the whole time i have been in the south i have had no problems with any white or black people.
Its just another one of the medias negative images it wants to create for the world.

I haven't really been to the deep south, the furtherest I've been was at Carolwins (NC/SC state border), Tennessee, and Kentucky (in less than a day) so I can tell you that living in Southwestern Virginia there is some racism but it's not too bad really.

i dont think geography has anything to do with racism
you can be the most tolerate person and be a true southerner and vice versa
therefore its all upto a persons values and up bringing
i m from south ( ga ) i dont consider myself racist
being called racist is an insult
Just stop spending too much time on tv
get a job and experience life yourself
watching tv all day long wont give you answers

No, that is a very HORRIBLE stereotype. We're just as accepting as any other state. I'm from Texas and as far from racist as can be. I believe that you should judge someone based on their character and how they act... not the color of their skin. My girlfriend is half black, too. So, you know. Silly stereotypes, you make everyone angry and are hardly ever true.

depends on the area and on the tv show....we aren't all redneck hicks....many have moved way past racism, while others continue to see blacks and hispanics as inferior and as unsuitable. We also have many poorer blacks, which only increases this judgement. We are, typically, more racist than northern and western states, but each person is his own man/woman and there a plenty of people who have risen above this stereotype.
Our older population in the deep south tend to use the n word regularly and have passed this on to their children, but our main problems seem to be in inter-racial issues--not mixing socially, physically, etc. is still a big taboo in many areas.
