I know this is a stupid question but why?

My first guess is that they are just a "show" team.

most of the gloebtrotters are just washed up nba players or guys who played in college that weren't good enough to make it in the nba.

most of the stuff the globetrotters do isn't allowed in real games.

a couple times a year the globetrotters play a scrimmage game against a college team.

if the gloebtrotters were in the nba they wouldn't win a game. they're not very skilled basketball players, they're more like magicians.

they are fun to watch tho...check out this cool video:

Against the Miami Heat? Yes, they could. Yes, the Globetrotters are showboating and go out there to put on a show. No, they don't have the best players. But they do still have talent, and they have fun. Look at Shaq in the All-Star game. He showboated too. Missed a free throw just so he could go dunk it. If Shaq joins in on having the fun - then yes, the Globetrotters would win. That's what they do. I like the thought, but you could never get the Globetrotters (and therefore any NBA team playing against them) to play competitively. Hell, even MJ would probably have too much fun to worry very much about winning. And that's no knock on MJ's competitiveness (we all know he wants to win!), but more a compliment to the Globetrotters.

They do not have NBA caliber talent. However the 27 year old rookie on the Raptors Jamario Moon played for the Globetrotters and he has been great so far this year. Last game he had 6 blocks!!!!!! (also 15 points and 9 rebounds). He is definitely a candidate for rookie of the year and will probably be in the slam dunk contest this year. So the Globetrotters do have some talent.

the globetrotters is an exhibition team that showcases athleticism and comedy and were initially a serious competitive team and would only clown around for the audience after establishing a safe lead. you could say that the globetrotters was first created to showcase the skill of the black athletes against what was then an all-white establishment of the NBA.

wilt chamberlain was a 2 time member of the globetrotters, joining them before his rookie season in the NBA and once again after retiring for a one game exhibition on board the USS Nimitz. a number of NBA hall of famers also joined the team one time or another. so to say they weren't good is not only naitivity, but also stupid.

before the advent of live game broadcasting, they were the ambassadors of the game, bringing their brand of basketball to countries where basketball was largely unknown. and they would have to be considered as one of the forces that allowed the NBA, and to all major sports, to open its doors to black athletes.

but if you're talking about the harlem globetrotters now, yeah, they can do any better than the knicks.

When they first started in 1926, they were a competitive team (they hail Wilt Chaimberlain and many others as former players) and would usually clown around after they had a safe lead in a game. They became more of an entertainment venue than a competitive sports team over the years. I don't think they'd be good in the NBA. Their antics would probably get them a lot of technicals in today's game.

You answered your own question correctly. They are only a show team. Their main purpose is to bring entertainment to kids who can't afford to watch a professional game. The other team they play is part of the show, (think about it, how many times can you put the ball up the back of another players shirt and he not know it's there?)
Most of the time when they play either a college team or NBA team for real competition they get blown out.
It's a good show and they are fun to watch.

Well your guess is kind of right, but they are also are not in the NBA because what they do is not exactly by the NBA rules, they like to travel play around, and would not fit in the NBA. Although I have heard that some guy is in the NBA and was once a Globetrotters. I think that these guys are not good, but they are only good in their own way, and I think that they have more fun then the guys in the NBA.

You're absolutely right. The Trotters were formed to entertain basketball fans with fancy and comic routines. They aren't trained to play a competitive game though their players are individually talented.

Obviously none of you are aware of what the Trotters make for playing. Many of them could have played in the NBA but would have had to take a pay cut. Don't forget about Bob Gibson who was also a Trotter before turning to baseball.
