Do beautiful women acquire greater opportunities than women who aren't?

2007-11-26 17:20:16 · update #1

I didn't ask if beautiful women USE their minds less, I asked if they RELY on their minds less. These are NOT the same thing.

IS ATTENTION TO BEAUTY A DISTRACTION FROM INTELLIGENCE?
[By both men and women.]

Dismissing one's rewards for beauty earlier in life (specifically modelling) as the means to invest in one's future (now their present) success, denies the importance their beauty had in acquiring that success! Now if a beautiful woman made no intentional effort to derive reward based on her beauty, but relied strictly on scholastic ability (especially in fields where beauty is largely irrelevant), then and only then might an argument against their reliance on beauty have significant weight.

REGARDLESS OF HOW SOPHISTICATED YOU ARE!

Are too many feminists denying the(ir) continued reliance on beauty for power by many women?

If so, how does that conform to the ideals of feminism?

Do women who have great bodies rely on their minds less than women who haven't?

Jen
I have always remained active. I like to push and challenge my body. I'm thankful that I receive greater opportinities due to my appearance. I have always been taught and observed that looks don't last forever.

I truly believe that dressing the part, will secure your role that you want to play professionally, here in the U.S. Classes are decided by your zip code, career and style of dress. Through out history, the strong survive. People with beautiful bodies and appearance are more trusted in society. I'm a sales professional, and I know that I sell more due to my appearance. It's commonly known statisic proven in the industry.

I don't see anything wrong with using all available assets and resources. That said, unfortunately, due to too many distractions for attention, extroverted, social people with beautiful bodies will feel more competition for their time.
They will then have to prioritize accomplishing their goals without compromising their ethics or responsibility.

No, beauty is a distraction from learning. What I'm suggesting is that we learn out of necessity. This has nothing to do with the intelligence quotient or capacity. It's about time, resources, and attention spent on priorities. People with beautiful bodies will get by in life easier in life, for a longer period of time, then less fit or attractive persons.

With no intentional efforts to receive rewards based on beauty beautiful women may only be slightly impaired from learning, due to constant distractions; depending on experiences and discipline levels.

Sophistication also plays a big role in social advancement and status.

The root of femisim, that is warped most frequently in this catagory, is only equality, not necessarily identical treatment of the sexes.

I do not deny that with great power comes great responsibilty. I did mention that beauty of body doesn't last forever. Thus the necessity to learn and grow, to maintain social advancement and status still exists for everyone.

Take care.

Though some do rely more on their looks, many do not. Reactions to a great body are simply side effects and are handled differently by individual women. Some women even hide their bodies in order to be taken more seriously...especially for a career.

No. While some opportunities open more readily to a beautiful woman, just as many shut down. Married men are hesitant to hire a woman that would cause any possible conflict with the wife. Also the fear of sexual harassment detours such choices for not wishing to be held responsible for the lude actions of other employees.

There's quite a lot of research which has been done in the area of 'looks/behaviour' and 'looks/treatment by others'.

For example, it's pretty widely known that:

~ Tall people generally receive more positive responses to questions for assistance from strangers than short people.

~ Conventionally attractive women who appear to need assistance will get offers of help more frequently than older or plainer women, or men, and those offers will come from both men and women.

~ People tend to be more sympathetic towards an attractive child in distress than an unattractive child, and attractive children are treated better, even by their own parents, than less attractive kids.

~ Attractive adults (male or female) get treated better than unattractive adults.

At this stage, it seems no-one is sure why, but we can probably all make reasonable 'guesses' or suggestions ~ evolution, survival of the species (good looks denote health which equals better 'survivor' genes) ~ the list goes on.

Of course, we could also suggest that it's part of our cultural baggage ~ we believe good looking people are more virtuous, etc, because we have been raised on stories of handsome princes and lovely maidens, so without even realising it we accept the idea that beauty = better.

Do beautiful people, in face or body rely on their looks more than their minds?

Maybe. After all, for beautiful people their looks are a two edged sword ~ being beautiful gets you better treatment, but it also means that people tend to attach a bimbo/himbo tag more often, when when it is obviously unfair.

But use their minds LESS? I'm not even sure if that's possible. I think we all probably use our minds about the same, just differently.

Cheers :-)

LOL. That would be the greatest excuse ever for the stereotype lovers. However, as any stereotype, your statement has very little to do with reality of the situation. If any woman relies on anything but her wits, she deserves the future she will be spending in a poor house. Our youth is given to us to learn the tools to build our future with. Now, as a beautiful woman (I actually spent my youth modeling for fashion houses of Paris and Milan), I dedicated my life to my own education and career building. As a result, at 41 I have two PhD’s and a research company under my belt, while still looking pretty good by anyone's standards. In short, to achieve anything in this life you do need to use all your mental abilities and work pretty hard. Good looking body would never substitute for an empty head and lazy disposition. Grass is not greener on the other side; I should know that from personal experience.

Edit: If by asking this question, you only wanted others to agree with your own point of view, you are not as intelligent as you like to think. Open your mind dear. Most of us honoring you by sharing our personal life experiences. If I was you, I would be grateful.

BTW, beauty has always been the reason for hate. It is so easy to assume that looks somehow substitute for brains, sense of humor and survival skills in a person. However, that assumption has nothing to do with reality of the situation. And intelligent people are usually most interested in the truth.

Btw, my entire life I personally had to fight the stereotypes. So much so, I am quite tired of the BS of it by now. I won't apologize for my good looks either. I enjoy being beautiful. It is a huge part of who I am. I am a WOMAN, and beauty is a huge asset to me. So, do try to forgive me that. However, if anyone ever assumed me to be an airhead, they ALWAYS lived to regret it.

I do not believe that is the case.

Most university-educated women I know rely on their minds regardless of our bodies. I would like to believe that some of us are quite strong in both departments.

Also, I do not like to speak ill of others, but some of those who should not be exposing their... expansive midriffs do not display any particular evidence of reliance on their minds.

Stereotypes have people that conform, but many who do not.

#1. No, women who rely on their bodies as a tool to get what they want are actually quite smart and manipulative, conniving, and clever. It takes brains to know how to use what you got.

#2. Most women who have a great body usually don't have the confidence to go with it to use it to their best advantage. (we are our own worst critics, regardless of how a male tells us we look, or many males for that matter)

I believe that women who have great bodies must rely on their minds even more so than women that don't have great bodies. People assume that beautiful women are less intelligent than plain women. Therefore, they do not give them the chance to prove themselves.

Not every woman with a great body flaunts it or uses it for her social advancement or "status." Not every woman with a great body lacks intelligence. Those are harmful stereotypes.

Sure, there are some women who use their beauty in ways that gain them these things (status, advancement)- no doubt. But I think it's important to point out that it's not every good-looking woman who does this. And further, those without "great bodies" can still manage to manipulate men with regard to sex.

Most women gain status and advancement through their own hard work and merit, regardless of how they look or what level of "intelligence" they may have.

nah my soon to be ex wife has an amazing body, and she is smart too. Well shes going to school, but i guess she relies on her body for money, lol, no not a whore. She is a server at a very nice restaurant. But like i said she is very smart, so i guess its whenever they feel like it. If they know they can get what they want with their brains then they will, but if they have to use their looks they will.

I think most woman rely on their minds more as they get older, as they become less aware of their bodies - regardless of whether it is desirable or not. I think all 'young' woman are super conscious of their body whether it is desirable or not and either abuse it or use it. Being just a body is extremely boring. Even for the most beautiful!
