Contractions feel similar to menstrual cramps, and can feel similar to the cramps you get in muscles (like in your leg or foot). They're very sharp and you generally feel them throughout your entire abdomen as well as in your back.

well for me contractions started off feeling like really bad, localised (to the groin), period pain.
[This period pain feeling people always talk about is very accurate because its just like when you get a period and your uterus cramps down to get the blood out, but only worse when its trying to push a baby down and out!]
It gradually gets stronger and more frequent and then felt like the period pain only much much worse with a vice like grip around your whole abdomen.
When my babies were crowning in the pushing stage its like you have to do a really really big poo (sorry, TMI!!) and then when the head is coming out its like a hot, burning, searing pain. Kinda of think along the line of being branded like a cow! But this is very short-lived and quick and goes away once the head is out.
All in all its really not that bad when you think back on it and with pain medication (if you want it) it makes it even more manageable. I only had a shot of pethedine at the end, no epidural, and I was fine and there were no complications.
You'll be fine and you will know when labour starts as it is unmistakeable. You will know it when it happens! When you can't talk or walk or laugh when the pain comes you know you are in established labour and should be going to the hospital.
Best of luck and best wishes for a lovely (quick!) birth

If you're hurting ALOT, that's a contraction. Just a little, could be a kick or an upset stomach.

Well for me they started out feeling like braxton and hicks. They say if you have a warm bath and they go away then its false labor but if they don't and they start to feel worse to the point where your on your hands and knees then I would start packing your bag and heading to the hospital....Sometimes the bath might stop it for a bit..it did with my second
