On the bottom of the map, there is a scale to find distance: 1" = 5 mi (this is for example only - different on all maps). However, the scale from point A to Point B is in a straight line and does not take into account the elevation or curves from A to B. Unless you have a surveyor's map, you won't know the real distance, only the map scale distance.

The part that gives the ratio. For example, it might say 1in:500mi That means one inch on the map corresponds to 500 mles in real distance. Sometimes it just says 1:500 and the implication is that people know they are talking about inches on the map and miles on the surface of the earth
