pennies and goldfish?

can goldfish live with pennies? i know beta fish cant

dinosaur pennies were mostly copper and would slowly disolve in water to produce copper salts that would kill ick and snails(and other stuff). modern pennies hardly have any copper and are mostly zinc so really won't cause any harm for goldfish (unless they are big enough to eat them) or betta's

Hi VolleyballGurl,it's not a good idea to put pennies or any other coinage in fish tanks because copper along with many other metals is poisonous to aquatic life & will leach in to the water. Much better decorations for fish tanks are marbles or glass pebbles.

I wouldn't do it. Pennies contain copper, even if it is a small amount. Copper is poisonous and thats why it can be used to kill things like snails in freshwater tanks. Its also the main ingredient in many ich medications. If a betta can't take it then its highly unlikely that a goldfish can.

Back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth,we used pennies to kill snails in our tanks. Just put in a penny or two and remove them as soon as the snails started dieing. Trouble was it would also affect the Nitrifying bacteria in the tank and just when all those dead snails started to rot,the bio-filter would be weak and an huge ammonia spike could occur. But it would kill the snails.

why would you want to put pennies in your fish tank? get them some nice colored marbles to play with. my goldfish push them around all over the tank.

No. Pennies are not good for ANY fish.

[edit] Because you don't know what's on them, and because they will corrode in your tank.

If you gotta have pennies, coat them with aquarium sealant and drop 'em in.
