It is perfectly legal and common practice..... but it can be iffy for a hotel owner to do so. So a good place will usually avoid doing so most times.

An owner may be thinking that he is garunteeing payment, damages or loss of everything in the room. But if you require cash up front or a credit card for multiple nights. If you take a credit card you make sure that written policy requires SEEING ID. That way managment is covered even if there is a loss financially. Loss in the room? If the place is secure, there is someone at the front desk at ALL times and the only exit is the front door this is no problem.

Where it becomes iffy is in regard to identity theft. You can have all the procedure in place in the world but a customers info is now available to anybody in the chain of employees. Shoot it could just all be thrown away later and someone could use it.

-ID (state of residence, current or past address, social security, picture, signature and license #). Just a fax of the copy could be enough to establish identity.
-Check in info..... car make, license plate, address, credit card # etc.
-It all adds up to a do-it-yourself identity theft kit
-As an aside.... they know that you are not at home

Legal yes but stupid. Managment can be sued out the (insert word) if any employee does something wrong. Even if it is not an employee and has nothing to do w. the hotel the result can be the same. That is why most choose to put certain procedures in place and not make copies of IDs.

Plus it has been shown that hotels in this day and age make less money by doing this. The traveler goes "so what is wrong w. this place and should I be worried". You as an employee should something happen could be at serious risk.

Locally it is not illegal. It is for the guest protection.
However after the guest leaves copies should be destroyed in a proper way so that they can not be used. Check on the company rules for lenght of time the records are kept and how they are destroyed. Protect yourself from being a pawn in identity theft.
