what if you called the social security office and they said I didn't have to?

We have done everything and no one has ever told me that I had to until I wanted to go back to school. So what am I suppose to do?

If you're taking his name, then yes.

On the positive side, it's a fun day, to receive your "new name" and be officially his :)

You have to change it on your ss card. Before your number was on your drivers license and you did not use your ss card. That is no longer true. Get it changed.

i have not changed my name, there is no reason my birth given name is mine to keep. it is my fathers name and i will carry it till
i die.
when i told my hubby i will not change my name, he got upset and i told him i will not change it for no one even for you.

and i am still carrying my birth given name after 22 years of marriage.

Edit:

on our tax forms it is two different name but consider as married. IRS does have copy of our marriage certificate.
so no problem as far as legality goes .

no i doubt it. The card is pretty much useless because i never have to show it. I have my number memorized and did sincd i got it 20 something years ago. I'm only asked to provide number on applications etc or when verbally asked by employers etc and never have to show it ever because its never a requirement. its just a number like your bith info nothing special.
