And it gets worse. Different words can mean totally different things according to the country, ie a fanny in USA is a bottom.....sure as hell ain't in the UK, lol.

If there are enough negative consequences if you continue to say a word, people stop. Society has essentially taken an informal vote and decided to agree with the Wizard behind the screen.
Then the parents and other authority figures jump in to enforce the rules.

I was told, in junior high, SATAN makes swear words. It makes sense, as I recently read in the New Testament about how obscene words should not be used.

Swear words are basically words our parents don't want us to use, even when we're grown!

People attach meanings to words. If those meanings are obscene to them, then the words themselves are obscene. Who is to say that "piano" means "a musical instrument with keys"? We all agree, though. All English speakers, anyway.

*Religion and Cults had rules governing how one must speak, and treat others.
It has been passed from one era to the next, and as it was passed more terms were added.
Profanity is not only certain references to body parts or sexual acts, but as to Race reference, Gender, and of coarse the ones we all know about. Also the use of certain body language is considered profane.

Good question. Probably just words that sounded bad, or the meaning was a form of "taboo", and it just dragged on over the years.
