why do people throw there shoes on the power lines?

there are two reasons i heard that shoes get up on the powerlines, but ive only seen one happen. The first is when someone kicks your *** takes your shoes and throws them up there so you cant get em back (saw that) and the second is that it has something to do with marking a location something about gangs or drugs or something i wasnt listening

Shoes on a power line with obvious gang symbols can mean a gang has taken ownership of an area and/or mugged someone there.

It may also mean that there is a drug dealer in the neighborhood.

or it may mean that some kids have nothing better to do then try to short out the electric grid in an entire neighborhood.

Well, I always wondered that, but not much, then I was reading a cop/suspense book located in LA and one of the cops said it was a sign like gang tagging, which made me think.

I have never read this anywhere else and the locations in which I have seen this, like my neighborhood, aren't active gang areas, (that I've noticed) so I don't know.

Perhaps it started that way and then like lots of gangster stuff spread to other young people as cool.

Means there is one bad squirrel in the neighborhood, cause them and birds are the only ones who can climb those tiny wires, and birds don't wear shoes!

Near my town, they throw shoes on a tree, now its a tourist attraction....go figure?

I guess it's kind of like writing "I was here" or any kind of graffiti. Maybe someone feels they've left their mark on the world because they don't have anything better to do.
