Even if they have a warehouse, they have to stock it from somewhere, so do they order directly from manufacturers, are their vendors for retailers? I'm talking about stores that sell new items, like target, kmart, or smaller stores, but not stores that sell overstocked/returned merchandise.

What about smaller stores that do not have warehouses or huge buy power?

all stores have warehouses, even small ones.

the defective/overstock merchandise goes back to the manufacturer (and the store gets a credit for it)

the only things that they do not get any money for is stuff on clearance (which if is is not sold then it is wasted revenue)

The stores order the goods from manufacturers. Often it is shipped to the warehouses that the stores own.

they buy from wholesalers or direct from a manufacturer . A wholesaler will buy from the manufacturer and offers a range of goods often of the same generaal type , like hardware .
