the problem with asking questions like this on line is how do you trust the info given?

the answer above has two crucial errors, which if you used, and if I were your teacher, I'd flunk you on the spot.

just type USS Indianapolis into the search bar above and you'll get all the info you need.....it will take you maybe one hour to read an write your answer.....and it will be yours, not some well meaning person's erroneous report.

USS destroyer, she hauled the parts for "little boy" bomb to tinian island, the capitains name was McVey ,he has the disticntion of being the only US captian courtmartialed for loosing his ship to hostile action. A japanese sub put a couple torpedos into her and she sank rapidly, without having time to send a distrss call, no one realised she was over due for days, a large portion of the crew died from exposer and shark attack ,over 800 lost.the navy would have been involved both ours and the japanese ,since their navy sank her. Good movie on her a few years back called "mission of the shark" and of course shes the ship Quinn was on in the movie jaws, rmemebr the scene with comparing injuries and tatoo's? so McVey lost his ship, it was a huge screw up and PR mess and the military needed a scape goat,so the courtmartialed him for failing to zigzag, even the japanese commander that sank him testified in his defense that he would have gotten the INDY no matter what. I think McVey eventually committed suicide post war.
